The Poison spell is a potent alchemical enchantment that infuses existing poisons or drugs with magic, dramatically enhancing their potency and allowing them to overcome even the strongest Fortitude Saves. This versatile spell can enhance a wide variety of poisons, each with its own unique effects. These include poisons that sicken, paralyze (such as Drow Poison), decrease abilities (like the Fleur Noire de Cerberus poison), or gradually reduce HP over several rounds, potentially rendering a creature unconscious or even killing it.
As the spell's power increases with level, it gains the ability to create "silent poisons," considered by many to be the most effective due to their undetectable nature. These insidious concoctions can weaken targets over time or trigger their effects (such as paralysis or sickness) after a delay, which can range from minutes to days, up to a maximum of one day per caster level. When employing silent poisons, the GM should secretly note the affected player and adjust their rolls behind the scenes, only revealing the poison's presence when its effects become obvious.
At higher levels, the spell can produce even more sophisticated poisons. These include poisons that are activated by a specific magic word or trigger, as well as silent poisons that can decrease various abilities without the infected person's knowledge. These high-level poisons can affect a target's Will Save, Fortitude Save, Reflex Save, Max HP, number of attacks per turn, or number of spells per turn.
Despite the spell's potency, there are several ways to counter its effects. Dispel Magic will always work to remove the magical enhancement from the original poison, provided the caster has a sufficient caster level. The Remove Poison spell, being specialized for this purpose, has a DC advantage compared to the Poison spell. Additionally, healing spells can be effective against certain poisons that attack HP.
